UNITEE, the New European Business Confederation, has the pleasure to announce that it has become an official supporter of TOGETHER, the global initiative led by the United Nations aiming at changing negative perceptions and attitudes towards refugees and migrants and at fostering social cohesion between the latter and the host communities.
The TOGETHER campaign is, along with two global compacts for migration and for refugees, the outcome of the UN Summit for Refugees and Migrants that was hosted in September 2016 by the UN General Assembly in Ney York. On that historic occasion, 193 Member States signed up one plan for creating a more responsible, predictable system for responding to large movements of refugees and migrants, and unanimously welcomed the TOGETHER initiative, committing themselves to its implementation.
In line with UNITEE’s vision and mission concerning the role of migrants in Europe, the TOGETHER campaign has, among others, the objective of addressing the problem of rising xenophobia, supporting the acceptance of refugees and migrants and showcasing the shared benefits of migration to economies and nations, while also acknowledging the legitimate concerns of host communities.
To inaugurate our organisation’s commitment to this cause and our newly established collaboration with the United Nations Regional Information Centre for Western Europe (UNRIC) – the office in charge of promoting this campaign – UNITEE interviewed for its online magazine The New European Caroline Petit, Deputy-Director of UNRIC and leader of the campaign, and Fabio Graziosi, Desk Officer for Italy, the Holy See, Malta and San Marino.
