UNITEE – New European Business Confederation – participated to the SME Assembly, one of the most notable events for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), in Europe. The conference takes place once a year during the European SME Week. Together with the network of SME Envoys, the assembly creates the governance structure of the Small Business Act. This year, the SME Assembly took place from the 22nd to the 24th of November in Tallinn, Estonia, and was the leading event of the European SME Week 2017.
The aim of the European SME Week, a European-wide campaign, is boosting entrepreneurship in Europe by giving guidance to existing entrepreneurs in finding information on available support and trying to encourage more people to set up their own businesses. Coordinated by the European Commission, this campaign consists of events throughout the whole year but the main event of the European SME Week is organised every autumn together with the SME Assembly and the European Enterprise Promotion Awards Ceremony. Basically the two main objectives of the SME Week are: informing entrepreneurs about available support and encouraging more people to become entrepreneurs. From existing and potential entrepreneurs to young people, business organizations, public authorities and educational institutions can get involved and participate.
The programme of this 6th year of the SME Assembly included the Schumpeter ‘Innovation in Enterprise’ lecture, the 11th European Enterprise Promotion Awards ceremony, keynote speeches from high-level politicians and dignitaries, interactive sessions where participants got an opportunity to drive the policy agenda, practical masterclasses and bootcamps, and an interactive expo to promote start-ups and scale-ups and those that support them. There was also the Ideas from Europe semi- finale, showcasing the conclusion of an EU country wide competition to find the ‘Top 10’ ideas from visionary entrepreneurs across Europe.
The SME Assembly took place during and in cooperation with the Estonian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
The programme was also the occasion to present the Annual Report on European SMEs 2016/2017 Focus on self-employment.
