On 24-25 November 2017, Brussels hosted the Federal Assembly of the European Movement International (EMI), the largest pan-European network of pro-European organisations. The Movement is present in over 30 countries and encompasses 36 international associations, bringing together European civil society, business, trade unions, NGOs, political parties, local authorities and academia.

UNITEE, as EMI member since 2016, actively participated in this important occasion which saw participant members from all over Europe.

The federal Assembly started with the working groups of 3 Political Committees, which correspond to EMI’s Policy Priorities 2018-2020, aiming at Shaping Europe’s Future and focused on the following issues:

  • Democracy, citizen participation and fundamental values: Bridging the gap between citizens, representative associations, and the EU; Promoting values and European Unity;
  • A social, sustainable and prosperous Europe: Investing in better education and jobs; Protecting the environment and the climate;
  • Europe in the World: Building a strong and united Europe on the global stage, Contributing to a better world;

The Federal Assembly then moved on to the election of EMI’s new President, Vice-President and Board Members.

Ms. Eva Maydell MEP has been elected as its new President, and Anna Widegren, Federica Sabbati, Brando Benifei MEP, Bernd Hüttemann, Yves Bertoncini, and Natasa Owens, as Vice Presidents, and Maria Heider as Treasurer.

Moreover, EMI new Board Members are: Miguel Angel Benedicto, Maja Bobic, Christine Bosse, Pier Virgilio Dastoli, Valentin Dupouey, Florian Hauger, Christof-Sebastian Klitz, Roselyne Lefrançois, Luc Martens, Valeria Ronzitti, Aura Salla, Ela Taskent.

The new EMI Board is younger and more diverse, and a wider range of cultures, languages and professional backgrounds is now represented.

The newly elected President Eva Maydell said: “Truly understanding the big responsibility that EM International members gave me today, I want to thank them all for the support. I promise to respond with all my energy and lead the EM International in the creation of the new story for Europe; a story that tells more about our bright future on the continent than about our national past.”

Mr. Jo Leinen MEP, who has served two terms as an active and dedicated President, has welcomed the new board members, wishing them to continue “the proud legacy of working for a more democratic and successful European Union”.
