This year’s awardees, decided by an international jury of experts and stakeholders, highlight the variegate added value of diversity for Europe.
The first award, most successful New European entrepreneur, went to Turkish-born Murat Kiran, founder of Conclusion, an IT services company based in Utrecht (The Netherlands). In accepting the Award, Mr Kiran remembered as a young immigrant from Turkey to the Netherlands, and how thanks to continuous effort and perseverance he was able to found his company, today employing more than 2000 people.
The award of New European Politician went to the young leader of the Belgian Groen Party at the House of Representatives, Meyrem Almaci, while Iranian-British entrepreneur Melody Hossaini was awarded New European Woman Influencer. In particular, Mrs Hossaini, who in 2009 founded InspirEngage International, a successful social enterprise training people to be successful by giving back, said: “This award really is an honour for me. The journey as an immigrant to being able to transform communities, is one that has become my life. I’m so inspired by the people we train, who work tirelessly with so little. They inspire me to do more.”
Finally, the highlight of the awards ceremony, the award for New European of the Year, was given to Belgian footballer Vincent Kompany, captain of Belgian National team and Manchester City. “Kompany has a talent that goes beyond borders, not only for his football talent, but also for his spirit, his entrepreneurial talent, his social engagement and his role in charities. His character and perseverance make of him one of the best footballers of the world. He is an example to many Europeans”, commented MEP Philippe Debacker (Open Vld). He then gave the award to Pierre Kompany, Vincent’s father, who said “I am proud of my son and happy that he is awarded here mainly as a man. A father has to be proud when his children grow to be better than him”.
